Breaking the Cycle: How GECT is Rewriting the Future for India's Underprivileged Youth

Every community has its own silent revolution. Not in the business centres or the legislative council, but in the hearts and minds of people. The revolution was fuelled by the idea that poverty should be a temporary problem, not the fate of the person. This is the vision of the Genesis Educational & Charitable Trust (GECT), the institution devoted to the single purpose – empowerment of underprivileged people through education and assistance.

The Birth of an Idea

The name "Genesis" implies the creation of something. And every contact with the child who has been deprived of opportunities becomes for us the chance to create a new beginning – the genesis of hope, possibility, and independence. There is one fundamental principle behind our actions. Everybody is born talented, but not everybody has opportunities to develop the talent. A child from a poor family is equal in terms of talent to a child from a wealthy family. The only difference lies in the amount of resources which can be used to nourish the talent.

Scholarship, Empowerment – We Do It All

As a charitable trust for underprivileged communities, we are aware that real change cannot be made by any temporary donations. Sustainable change can be made only through complex efforts directed at overcoming the problem of poverty. Therefore, our activities include much more than the mere existence of underprivileged children. They include:

Education: The Great Equalizer

It is known that education is the most powerful instrument with which one can change the world. But for a child who is hungry, illiterate or lives in the difficult conditions of slums, a book is the thing he or she simply cannot afford.

Here we come. GECT gives the chance to poor children to receive proper education with various programmes:

o   Scholarship Programmes: full financial support for the tuition fees, uniforms and books for the children, who have no choice and have to work to feed themselves.

o   Bridge Courses: for those children who left the education for some reasons and are not able to continue studying due to lack of knowledge.

o   Computer Literacy: nowadays the access to computers and the Internet is essential. With our help children get equal chances with other kids.

Beyond the Classroom Tuition: Holistic Development

A hungry child or a child without shelter is not able to study properly. The activities of our charitable trust are holistic. We understand that the welfare of the child is connected with the welfare of the whole family and community.

A.    Nutrition and Health: we organise midday meals and the check-ups to fight malnutrition and provide basic medical help.

B.    Women's Empowerment: you cannot uplift a child without uplifting a mother. That is why we organise special programmes of vocational training for the mothers of our students. Tailoring, handicraft, computer classes – everything to earn money and increase the standards of living. As a result, Mother can create the favourable environment where education is important and appreciated.

C.    Moral and Life Skills Training: we try to create good humans, not good students. Hygiene, civics and civic skills, and basic education on morality – this is what we teach our children. We want them to become successful specialists and, at the same time, the contributors to the society.

The Role of Community Involvement

We understand that GECT cannot work alone. In order to make really effective change, we have to involve the community. We organise regular awareness camps for parents about the importance of education and the problems of child labour. We collaborate with the local schools to help them to improve the infrastructure and teacher's training.

Why We Need You

As the charitable trust for underprivileged children, GECT relies on the generosity of donors and the dedication of volunteers. Problems and challenges of underprivileged children are numerous. As a resulting to the needs of our services exceed our current capacities. Each day we reject numerous appeals because we lack enough funds to support them.

And stepping here is where you can play an important role. You don't need to be a billionaire to help a poor child. Donations of several hundreds of rupees are enough to provide the kid with textbooks during a month or to pay for his or her studies during a semester.

Volunteers can participate as well. If you are able to teach the subject, to tutor the student or to organise the fundraising event, we will be grateful for your time.

Join the Genesis Movement

Although we’ve accomplished a lot, there is still a long way to go. There are thousands of children around us waking up each morning without hope. They require guidance. They require love.

The Genesis Educational & Charitable Trust welcomes you to join the movement. Be an individual sponsoring the education of a child, a company looking forward to fulfilling its CSR initiatives, or a volunteer teaching a skill; there is always something that everyone can do here.

Transformation is not a solo act; it is a symphony of collective effort. Being a charitable trust for underprivileged youth, GECT is the conductor, but we need the orchestra of individuals willing to make a difference in their lives by helping us turn the page and write a new story for these children.

Together, let us work towards making sure that the zip code of a child doesn’t become his fate. Together, let us give a Genesis to a generation that will transform the world.
